Haunted Hypertext Created by IUP Students and DHC

As part of the Writing Carnival at IUP on October 20, 2017, the Center for Digital Humanities and Culture created a collaborative writing experience titled the Haunted Hypertext.

Participants encountered an invitation to a story: "It began as a story set in a mid-Atlantic college town. As autumn leaves turn brown, visitors are invited to explore the paths that lead from one site to another. Perhaps you have heard rumors. Perhaps you hold the key to another piece of the story. Enter if you dare..."

The Center for Digital Humanities and Culture (DHC) at IUP supports scholarship, proof-of-concept explorations, and project applications of digital technologies in Humanistic inquiry. It recognizes that today technology saturates the entire academic sphere, from classroom, to library, to lab. It aims to facilitate conversation, collaboration, and resource sharing amongst specialists within the disciplines. It seeks to make connections between new technologies and traditional knowledge areas, as the academy navigates the "print-to-digital" paradigm shift.

Student Blogging - Wordpress/Buddypress

DHC co-director Kenneth Sherwood is continuing the teaching explorations of blogging with English 101 students this year -- using a new tool called Wordpress/Buddypress. Students are conducting audio interviews and using a blog to document their writing processes.

As Dr. Eric Glicker's research shows, one dimension contributing to the value of writing through blogs is the opportunity to create a community of learners in dialogue. So having others read the blog and comment is crucial to gaining the motivational and shaping effects of audience.

Open Journal Project

The availability of new digital tools and problems in academic publishing hav led many scholarly journals to investigate the transition from a print-format, subscription model to web publishing platforms. Such systems typically assist journal editors and writers in managing the peer-review and production process, while helping them to publish a broadly accessible and professional journal. Open Journal Systems is one such open access product being explored on a trial basis at www.IUPDHC.Org/openjournal.
